Understanding and Managing Your Nervous System: Tips for Busy Moms

As a busy mom, it's easy to feel overwhelmed and stressed, and our nervous system can take a hit. Our nervous system is responsible for our fight, flight, freeze, or fawn response, and when it's activated, it can impact our emotions, decision-making abilities, and overall well-being. In this blog post, we'll explore insights from my interview with Natalie Bedard on the Real Life Momz podcast on ways to understand and manage your nervous system so you can better navigate life's challenges.

1. Validate Your Emotions:

The first step in managing your nervous system is acknowledging and validating your emotions. We often suppress our emotions, especially if we're told it's unacceptable to feel a certain way. However, recognizing and accepting your emotions can help you process them and move forward. Take a moment to reflect on your feelings, and don't be afraid to say, "I feel scared," or "I feel angry."

2. Understand Your Wounds:

Our experiences shape our nervous system, and unresolved traumas can impact our response to situations. Reflecting on past experiences and understanding how they've shaped your nervous system can help you identify patterns and triggers. This insight can help you develop strategies to manage your emotions and reactions.

 3. Use Journaling:

Journaling is a powerful tool for understanding your thoughts and emotions. Writing down your feelings can help you process them and gain perspective. It's a safe space to express yourself without fear of judgment. Set aside time each day to journal, even if it's just for a few minutes.

4. Move Your Body:

Movement is essential for our nervous system. It helps to release tension and pent-up energy. Put on music that makes you feel good, and dance for a few minutes. If dancing isn't your thing, try some gentle stretching or yoga. Any movement is better than none and can help regulate your nervous system.

5. Seek Support:

Talking to a therapist or trusted friend can be incredibly helpful in managing your nervous system. A therapist can provide you with tools and strategies to cope with stress and anxiety, while a trusted friend can offer a listening ear and support. Don't be afraid to reach out for help when you need it. It's important to remember that taking care of your mental health is just as important as your physical health.

Managing your nervous system is vital to maintaining your well-being, especially as a busy mom. By validating your emotions, understanding your wounds, journaling, moving your body, and seeking support, you can better navigate life's challenges and regulate your nervous system. Remember, by prioritizing your well-being, you'll have more energy, patience, and love to give to your family.
