Improving Gut Health: The Impact of Food Quality

Improving Gut Health: The Impact of Food Quality

Gut health is essential for our overall well-being. The gut, often referred to as the second or third most important organ in our body, is connected to various aspects of our health, including our emotions, energy levels, skin health, and more. Taking care of our gut can significantly impact how we feel and function. This week’s Real Life Momz podcast guest, Bia Fernandes, health and wellness entrepreneur, offers her insights on gut health and how she is helping women feel better.

One key aspect of maintaining gut health is consistency. It's important to adopt daily habits that support a healthy gut and to be mindful of what we put into our bodies and how it affects us. This includes paying attention to the foods we consume and considering any potential allergens or sensitivities.

Bia tells us how a gut health reset can be beneficial in this regard. By eliminating common allergens such as gluten, dairy, soy, corn, and alcohol for a period of time, usually around 30 days, will give our bodies a chance to reset and identify any specific sensitivities. This break from potentially problematic foods can help reduce inflammation and improve overall gut health.

It's worth noting that the quality of our food is essential. For example, the food we consume in the United States may contain more pesticides and hormones than in other countries. While it may not be feasible for everyone to purchase organic and healthier options exclusively, making conscious choices can still positively impact gut health.

Eliminating gluten, in particular, can be beneficial as it is known to be inflammatory and may contribute to various health issues. Bia states that by giving our bodies a break from gluten for a period of time, we can reduce inflammation and support better overall health, similar to how an oil change helps maintain a car's performance.

Bia loves to think about alternatives rather than eliminating foods.

Cutting out dairy doesn't mean giving up on our favorite foods or beverages. Thankfully, there are various dairy alternatives available in the market. Almond, oat, and coconut milk are just a few examples. These alternatives provide a creamy texture and offer a range of nutrients. Experimenting with different options can help you find the one that suits your taste and dietary needs.

Adopting a diet that eliminates common allergens such as soy, dairy, and gluten can positively impact our health. However, it's important to remember that the goal is not to restrict ourselves entirely but to find suitable alternatives that allow us to enjoy a wide range of foods. Remember, always consult with a healthcare professional or registered dietitian for personalized advice on gut health and dietary choices before making any changes in your diet.
